Special Awards
Several years after its inception, DRAW responded to a growing desire to recognize special contributors . . . individuals or groups that gave a little something extra to further the cause of DRAW. And while those who so faithfully contribute to DRAW seldom seek any personal recognition, some kind deeds were simply too generous to go unacknowledged.
In an effort to honor the extra-special efforts of these contributors, DRAW created their own special award, DRAW Person Of The Year.
In addition to Person of the Year, DRAW occassionally names a Company, Group, Couple, and Volunteer of the Year. These awards are presented annually each October at the Texas Motorplex in Dallas during the DRAW Memorabilia Auction.
Throughout the racing season, DRAW's Board of Trustees accepts nominations for these awards and each September during the board meeting at the U.S. Nationals, a lively discussion ensues to decide who will be honored. Sifting through the many kind deeds performed each year by wonderful DRAW supporters, it's a difficult job to narrow the list down to just one recipient, a task best described by board members as "a labor of love".
DRAW's 2007 Special Awards
Lifetime Award
DRAW’s annual awards were presented during their Auction held on Saturday evening of the O’Reilly Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX.
The Life Time Membership Award is one award that DRAW does not bestow often. In fact, in the 21 years of DRAW’s existence, only four people had received this award - Shirley Muldowney, David McClelland, Barbara Parks and Shirley Carrier.
This year a Life Time Membership was presented to Mr. Robert Frey. Bob was described as being there for DRAW as a friend, mentor, and a fundraiser.
DRAW Person of the Year
When DRAW needs help with any of our fund raising activities, there is one lady that DRAW can always turn to for help with our projects. For her outstanding service and support of DRAW’s efforts to provide “Fast Help for Fast Friends”, Carolyn Ashbee of Goodyear was named DRAW Person of the Year 2007.
Company of the Year
This company’s partnership started 36 years ago. They have been involved in drag racing for over 25 years, racing ET brackets, Super Gas, and Super Comp. Retirement was boring for this partnership. This company found themselves not only seeking other business opportunities but expanding their racing program dramatically. In 2005 they took their first adventure into Pro Racing and this year are challenging for their first world championship.
Beyond their success on the racetrack, they established a program to help support the military personnel defending our country. We at DRAW and all the injured racers appreciate all their hard work and devotion to DRAW and the Drag racing community. DRAW is proud to present the Company of the Year to Rodger and Karen Comstock of Mail Terminal Services.
